📚When Israel went out of Egypt,
the house of Jacob from
a people of foreign language,
114:1 This is a psalm about the exodus from Egypt in bold metaphor and beautiful poetic imagery (Ps 81:10; Ex 13:3; Lev 26:13).⚜
2 ðŸ“šJudah was God’s sanctuary,
and Israel his dominion.
114:2 The nation of Israel became God’s home on earth, the people of His kingdom – Ex 19:5-6; 25:8; 29:46. God is so exalted He must stoop to see the heavens and earth (Ps 113:5-6), but He is so loving that He comes to dwell with a sinful, stubborn nation.⚜
3 ðŸ“šThe sea saw it and fled;
the Jordan turned back.
114:3 Ex 14:21-22; 15:8; Josh 3:14-17. God’s power was revealed in His control of natures elements (compare Matt 8:23-27).⚜
4 ðŸ“šThe mountains skipped
like rams,
and the little hills
like lambs.
5 ðŸ“šWhat ailed you,
O sea, that you fled?
O Jordan, that you turned
back?
6 ðŸ“šO mountains, that you
skipped like rams?
O little hills, like lambs?
7 ðŸ“šTremble, you earth, at the presence
of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
114:7 Ex 19:18; 1 Chron 16:30; Heb 12:25-29. Note on the God of Jacob at Ps 146:5.⚜
8 ðŸ“šWho turned the rock into
a pool of water,
the flint into a spring
of waters.
114:8 An example of God’s loving care for His people – Ex 17:6; Num 20:11; 1 Cor 10:3-4.⚜
